Why Black History Month Is Personal for Me—and Why I Travel the Way I Do

Black History Month has never felt abstract to me.

It’s personal. It’s layered. And it’s deeply connected to why I travel—and why I built Urban Chic Travelistas the way I did.

For much of my life, history felt incomplete. I learned what many of us learned—fragments, omissions, carefully edited versions of the truth. It wasn’t until I began traveling with intention that those missing pieces started to come together.

Walking through historic sites. Listening to local historians. Standing in places that carried both pain and pride. These experiences shifted something in me. They reminded me that Black history is not just something to be remembered—it’s something to be experienced.

Travel taught me what textbooks didn’t. It taught me that Black culture didn’t disappear—it adapted. That our legacy didn’t end—it expanded. And that our stories deserve space, truth, and respect. This is why I don’t curate surface-level trips.

I care about who tells the story.

I care about how it’s told.

And I care about why travelers are showing up.

Living part-time in Ghana only deepened this understanding. It reinforced that cultural travel is not about checking destinations off a list—it’s about relationships. With people. With place. With self.

Black History Month reminds me that my work is bigger than travel. It’s about connection. It’s about education. It’s about legacy.

And if my work encourages even one person to travel differently—to ask deeper questions, to honor culture, to move with intention—then I’m doing exactly what I was meant to do.

Because Black history deserves more than a moment.

It deserves movement.
